Wearing an incongruous Afro wig, Luffy dukes it out with the captain of the Foxy Pirates as this collection of One Piece begins. His victory frees Robin and Chopper from the Foxies–along with 497 crew members who had been shanghaied onto their ship. Technically, they're members of the Straw Hats now, but Luffy dismisses them. The Going Merry makes landfall on a tiny island where a mysterious seahorse-like creature steals everyone's memories except Robin's. The rest of the crew retain only souvenirs from early childhood, and a series of mini-flashbacks shows the familiar characters as children. No sooner does Luffy use his Gum-Gum powers to resolve this crisis then the Foxies reappear, as annoying as ever. But Luffy and his friends come up against a much more formidable foe in Admiral Aokiji, one of the three most powerful Marines in the world. Aokiji knows Robin from earlier times and warns Luffy that she's far more dangerous than he realizes. The Admiral's ability to freeze anything he touches makes him impossible to defeat–only his sense of honor keeps him from eliminating Robin, Luffy, and the rest of the Straw Hats. Obviously viewers will see more of him as this storyline develops. The Going Merry is badly in need of repairs, so it's fortunate that the Straw Hats find their way to Water Seven, a.k.a. Water City, the home of the world's greatest shipwrights. In Japan, the beginning of this new adventure marked the start of season eight of One Piece. The designers clearly had fun creating Water City, a fantastic metropolis that suggests a combination of Renaissance Venice, a waterslide park, and a giant fountain.
