The characters and filmmakers pick up the pieces of the fantasy-adventure Gurren Lagann after the death of Kamina. Crushed by the loss of his “Bro,” Simon finds himself unable to power up the title mecha, let alone fight. But the support of his comrades, especially Princess Nia, leads him back to Kamina's dictum: “Rejecting common sense to make the impossible possible is the Team Gurren Way!” The war against Spiral King Lordgenome climaxes in a spectacular battle at Teppelin, the capitol city-mecha. But even as he falls in combat, Lordgenome warns Simon of a yet greater threat to come–a dire prophecy that is realized seven years later.Director Hiroyuki Imaishi continues his use of dynamic cutting, bold colors, and imaginative graphics: some flashbacks and reaction scenes are done in alternate visual styles. But, like Simon and his friends, the viewer can't help missing the irrepressible Kamina, who added so much élan–and so little sense–to Gurren Lagann.
