Ouran High School is a private academy, catering to the super-rich, the super-cute, and the superficial. To amuse themselves–and earn a few extra yen–the richest, most attractive boys in the school have set up a host club, where they dispense tea and charm the girls. Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student who's such a schlump no one even realizes she's a girl, stumbles into the club and breaks an antique vase. To repay the staggering cost of the vase, the members demand she dress as a boy and join the club. Although she's an outsider and a “commoner,” Haruhi soon becomes everyone's favorite. Club president Tamaki (who represents the “blond prince” type) falls for her; Mitsukuni (the “Lolita boy”) adores her, as do identical twins Hikaru and Kaoru (“forbidden brotherly love”). Despite their good looks, social prominence, and wealth, the boys have led lonely lives, which they recount in the later episodes. Hikaru and Kaoru never paid any attention to anyone else until Tamaki recruited them. Mitsukuni had to follow his family tradition and became a martial arts champion. The Host Club has given them the one thing they lacked: a sense of belonging. Similarly, Haruhi finds a level of acceptance she's never before experienced. The warmth of those realizations doesn't prevent the Hosts from squabbling and playing pranks, but it gives the series a balance that keeps it from feeling too silly. The success of Ouran High School Host Club (2006) suggests that a reverse harem comedy can be just as much fun as the standard nerdy-guy-in-a-houseful-of-beauties model.
